I think I might have to go with shapeshifting. Imagine being able to live diverse experiences. To feel what it’s like to walk through the world as someone else. Shapeshifters are often depicted as deceitful or deranged, but I think it would make for a truly empathetic person.
I have given several of my characters high enough intelligence that they can immediately begin conversing with anyone in their own language in a foreign place. That's what would be useful to me.
One magical ability? That's a tough one. My choice leans on the 'superhero' genre but I would pick 'superspeed'. Second choice? teleport.

I always wanted psionic powers like the Deryni -- telepathy, mainly, but some telekinesis and healing thrown in there.
