I asked this in a Note yesterday, but since no one answered (busy time of day perhaps?) I thought Iād ask it again here with a slight twist.
Tropes! Love āem, or hate āem?
Writerās Digest describes tropes as, ācommon plot devices within various genres of writing. For instance, a popular trope in romance fiction is bringing together two people who despise each other and making them fall in love.Ā Other tropes that litter literature include the story involving an orphaned child who has great powers or the roguish character who's a reluctant hero.ā
the Orphan
Found Family
the Chosen One
the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Hidden Inheritance
Class-System
Separated at Birth
and so, so many more!
What are some of your favorite tropes in fantasy fiction?
Which tropes are overdone and make you grind your teeth?
Me?
I love a good Underdog story, and if there are Found Family involved? All the better as far as Iām concerned. Found Family will often go further for each other than blood family, in my experience. But if an author can put a fresh spin on those, Iāll often sit and read until I finish the tale. I enjoy more than just those two, but those are my favorite tropes.
What about you?
I think the Chosen One trope is very overdone, but Iām still open to it with a twist. In one of my books I plan to publish, there actually is a chosen one but the main character is actually someone else, so I think thatās a twist. I love the enemies to lovers trope in romance, but I believe the nuances and details are what makes any story rather than a combination of tropes.
Tropes are fun. Sometimes, I like to grab one and see if I can subvert it or mix it with another one.
